Default Wooden Playstand

I am looking for instructions/guidance on building a wooden playstand for Callao (B&G). My son needs to do a project for one of his classes and I thought that would be something unique and something that we could get some use out of. Any suggestions or tips on what type of wood is best, etc?

Thanks!

Cool...thanks! On our property we have Bradford Pear, Pear, Pecan, Pine, Peach, Crepe Myrtle and Oak trees. I can get some River Birch, Maple or Cedar trees limbs from my mother-in-laws property. Any suggestions on which types of wood hold up better or are better for birds would be much appreciated!

Initially he thought of making the base out of wood and finishing it, but I didn't think that the varnish would be safe to use. ?? It does not have to be made completely out of wood, the base can be made of metal and he knows how to weld/has a welder.

Here's one link that has a list of some safe woods that can be used. Bird Toy Outlet's list of Safe Woods for Your Bird No outside woods can be used if they have been sprayed with anything or even the area around has been sprayed for anything. Crepe Myrtle you will find will show up on safe and unsafe wood lists, depends on where you look. I would NEVER use it. I do know someone that almost lost a bird from it.

I would not use a finish if there is a chance the bird could chew on it.

Thanks...you're great! I will steer clear of Crepe Myrtle! I will post pics of his progress...he has to draw his plans up and have them approved before he can start construction.
