Our gov't. is getting a bit too involved these days. I would surely hope they would never try to tell us if we already owned those birds, we would have to breed them to keep them or worse ~ what if we couldn't keep them? HIDE is right!

"Addition of a foreign species to the Federal list of threatened and endangered species places restrictions on the importation of either the animal or its parts. Listing also serves to heighten awareness of the importance of conserving these species among foreign governments, conservation organizations and the public."

so basically what we are doing already? if i understand correctly, all this does is further prevent people from stealing parrots out of the wild and trying to get the world to understand what is going on with poachers and help stop them. this is a GOOD thing!

unless i am totally missing something, this has nothing to do with people that breed or own these animals already. or ones that plan to purchase legally acquired animals.

Oh good! I think I understand now too. I was afraid they would try to take Ruby. (bad idea! Texas girls can shoot shotguns and we have great aim) We'd vote for anything that kept poaching down. I saw a photo once of all these Greys all tied up and "piled" in a box. I will never get that picture out of my head. Some had died.

I remain in the original " Not sure how to take this" category.
ANYTIME government sticks it's nose into something... well... One had best BEWARE!!! If nothing else, there's the fine print and "double-speak" there that would concern Me... and there's always clauses and revisions!
Just My opinion,
Lucas

It is just a small hop to go from an endangered list to a restrictive list. Once the US government puts any species on a Federal endangered list then they open up the state governments to restrict ownership of an endangered species such as in our state of Arizona and the thick-billed parrot for example. I can’t even tell you how many hoops you have to jump through to even be considered for a permit and then your home has to be inspected to make sure it is an adequate environment and all of this has to be paid for by the person applying for a permit, (the least of the worries). Additionally this animal CANNOT BE CONSIDERD A PET. It has to be used for educational proposes or to promote science, or you can be considered a foster home because the animal cannot be returned to its native habitat. Once a permit is granted then you have opened your home up for random inspections by the government and have to supply detailed records of your care. If anything is not up the standards of the inspector then the animal may be confiscated, just like that. To top it off the permit has to be renewed EVERY YEAR for a fee and if your permit is not renewed then the animal can be confiscated and criminal charges can occur.

Just look up “exotic animal laws” or “restricted live wildlife laws” for your particular state. Our state is not pretty.

We know we have endangered species and a law against importation is already in place, it just needs better enforcement. My gut feeling tells me this is the first step to a back door for HR669 just to see what they can get away with, (foreign species = nonnative wildlife). Maybe I am being paranoid and I hope to God I am wrong about this but I will be watching this very closely.

There is nothing in the world I would not do to protect the ones I love. Do not mess with my kids and do not mess with my fids!
