Default Do you know....?

Your birds sex for sure? Another interesting article in the new Bird Talk. I was going to set up a poll, but those of us with more then one may need more then one answer to cover all our birds. Here are the options:

1) A DNA Test Confirmation
2) My Bird laid an egg
3) My Bird's Species in sexually dimorphic
4) I just know
5) It's behavior is very gender specific
6) Actually I don't know
7) Surgically sexed (not an option in the article)

My answers are 1,2,3 and 7

My answers are 1, 2, and 6. (I suspect Rocky is male and Nonami is female, but I have no scientific confirmation thereof)

1, 2, 3, and 6.

I had a cockatiel which the breeder was sure was a male based on the feather patterning on the undeside of the tail (or something like that), but then she laid eggs.

Unhappy

I know that my Scarlet Macaw and Eleanora Cockatoo are DNA sexed females. I have just this week sent off a dna sample for my little sun conure.
I feel VERY strongly that you all should know the sex of your bird, as I lost my sweet Jardines parrot exactly one month ago to egg binding
She was 10 years old, and had never laid an egg, so we all thought she was a boy.
She was fine in the morning, whistling, eating breakfast, and playing with me. When I came home from work, she looked like a pinecone all puffed up and refusing to eat or pay any attention to me. Since it was after hours, I had to take her to an emergency vet who knew nothing about birds. The next morning I was on the doorstep of the avian vet before they opened...
They tried everything to save her, including surgery, but she died anyway. The vet said that she had just hidden it from me too long, as birds naturally do. If I had known she was a girl, the emergency vet might have done something differently(or not). I will never know. I am still so heartbroken...crying as I write this....but if my story saves even ONE bird from this disaster, my tears are worth it.

I'm so sorry that you lost your little Jardine's, sending big hugs. That is also the main reason I think it's important to know the sex of your bird.

#'s 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 depending on which birds. My macaw will go from a 6 to a 1 on Tuesday. Even though the previous owner said he was a #1 male.
